You can use Excel to produce sound

Posted in Music on February 9, 2008 by philipvonk

As most people know sound is a wave motion. The frequency of middle “C” is 440Hz, this means that at this frequency 440 revolutions are made per second. As one revolution mathematically is 2pi or (2 x (22/7)) then a time scale (x axis) can be built up using these two factors. The amplitude (y-axis) is found from the sin of the value on the x-axis.

An whole octave can be made up using the relationship f = 2^(n/12) x 440 Hz. on an Excel spreadsheet.

And by combining the appropriate notes a chord can be simulated.

The banjo ukulele was the intrument played by Good old George. But surprisingly it has also been used by musicians such as Brian May (Queen) and Gerge Harrison (Beatles)

Good Old George

This picture of good old George is believed to be in the public domain, I disclaim any liability.

“When George Formby sang With My Little Stick Of Blackpool Rock in 1937, it sent shockwaves through the BBC, the corporation’s moral guardians were concerned by the songs lyrics so they banned parts of it.”
